Discover Amazing True Stories in Nonfiction Books!

Did you know that some of the coolest stories you’ll ever read are true? That’s what nonfiction is: books about real animals, places, science, and how things work. Reading nonfiction can help you learn new words and answer big questions about the world. And the best part? You can choose books about things you already love—like dinosaurs, ocean animals, construction trucks, or even the weather!

Nonfiction picture books are great because they use short sentences, fun facts, and awesome illustrations. The pictures help you see up close what the book is talking about, and the facts help you discover something new! You can point to interesting details, make guesses, and talk about what you notice. Nonfiction isn’t homework—it’s exploring!

Here are a few great nonfiction books you might enjoy:

Ocean Animals from Head to Tail by Stacey Roderick

Each new animal is introduced with a question, such as “What ocean animal has a head like this?” with a zoomed-in illustration of that body part. This lends an air of mystery, and offers a wonderful chance for you to test your knowledge by taking in clues and making predictions! When you’re ready, turn the page to Kwanchai Moriya’s bright, full color illustration of the entire animal, the animal’s name and an informative paragraph.

A Seed Grows by Antoinette Portis

Have you ever wondered how a sunflower grows? This reads like a picture book with minimal text and corresponding bold illustrations, but beautifully and accurately depicts the life cycle of a sunflower. The final two pages are filled with additional facts and diagrams to learn even more!

Crayola Winter Colors by Jodie Shepherd

Part informative, part how-to-draw, all showcasing the delights of Winter! Divided into three sections, this book combines amazing photos with illustrations to highlight colors found throughout Winter. Be sure to check out the color chart, glossary, and index found in the book. You can also learn about the other three seasons with the other books in the series!
