Ten lucky kids are getting the chance to step into the spotlight — literally! Thanks to a generous donation from the Peoria North Rotary Club, nine students will join Arizona Broadway Theatre’s HyRev performance troupe, and one will attend the theatre’s Academy for Young Performers fall camp — completely free. That means 10 new young actors, singers, and dancers get to explore their love of performing without worrying about the cost.

Stephen Hohendorf, Arizona Broadway Theatre’s education director, said scholarships like these can truly change lives. “We want every kid who dreams of performing to have that chance,” he explained. “It’s not just about acting or singing — it’s about confidence, teamwork, and learning to shine.”

The theatre’s HyRev troupe brings together talented kids and teens who train, rehearse, and perform musical numbers throughout the year, while the Academy for Young Performers camp gives younger students a chance to act, dance, and make new friends. Many students say being part of these programs has helped them come out of their shells.

One of those students is 12-year-old Oliver Santangelo, who received one of this year’s HyRev scholarships. “This is my first semester in HyRev and I’m enjoying every moment,” Oliver said. “I love performing on stage and seeing the smiles on the audience’s faces. Plus, I am making so many new friends who share my passion for singing and dancing. I’m especially excited about our big summer trip and the chance to perform in California. One of the best parts of HyRev is that it lets me keep singing and dancing, even if I am not in a current show. HyRev helps me stay sharp and continually improve my skills. I’m really grateful for this scholarship because I can keep pursuing what I love.”

The scholarships were made possible by a $4,750 donation from the Peoria North Rotary Club. Club president and retired teacher Darlene Eger said she’s always amazed by how much students grow through the arts. “Performing helps kids discover their voice,” she said. “They come away with confidence, friendships, and a sense of accomplishment.”

Arizona Broadway Theatre hopes to continue expanding its youth programs so even more kids can experience the magic of the stage — whether they’re future Broadway stars or just learning to believe in themselves. “With a little support and encouragement,” Hohendorf added, “these kids can truly soar.”
